SUMMARY:Art After Dark
DESCRIPTION:Experience art and culture from across Cuba and Latin America. Celebrate the new Layered Lives exhibition featuring 60 works by 10 Cuban women artists. The exhibition brings together three decades of photography\, paintings\, ceramics and prints illustrating the resilience\, innovation and expansive creativity of Cuban women artists whose layered stories continue to shape our understanding of Cuba and its diaspora. The evening’s activities include: \n\nTours and activities relating to the Layered Lives exhibition\, highlighting contemporary work by Cuban women artists.\nDance the salsa and bachata with Gator Salsa. All skill levels welcome!\nGainesville Latino Film Festival Kickoff at 6 pm with the film “Una canción para mi tierra.” Seating is limited.\nSelection of light bites while they last.\n\nGenerous support for Art After Dark provided by Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program\, and a private grant. Museum Nights are also sponsored by UF Student Government and the Office of the Provost.  \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bodies of Water: Hydrofeminism in Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Associate Curator of Contemporary Art\, Sara Garzón will lead a discussion covering two readings that focus on the significance of water in contemporary art. Attendees will explore Astrida Neimanis’s concept of hydrofeminism alongside Lisa Blackmore’s notion of the hydrocommons\, examining how artists engage water as a cosmopolitical medium that reconfigures relationships among bodies\, territories and more-than-human worlds. \nA tour of the exhibition Layered Lives will further consider what Blackmore describes as the “liquid turn” in contemporary art and its implications for artistic research. \nThe two brief readings are provided here and are excerpts from Lisa Blackmore’s “Art for the Hydrocommons: Rethinking Human-Water Relations in Latin America” (pg. 24 – 44) and “Hydrofeminism: Or\, On Becoming a Body of Water” (pg. 85 – 99). \nThe program is supported by the UF Center for the Humanities and Public Sphere and offered in conjunction with their speaker series on Blue Humanities: humanistic approaches to understanding the cultural\, social and personal significance of water.

SUMMARY:Art + Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:This series of guided meditations is inspired by art in the Harn collections and led by expert facilitators with years of experience. Take a break from your regular schedule to slow down\, experience stillness\, and re-charge. Forty-five minutes of guided meditation is followed by an art spotlight tour.  No registration required   \nIn this session\, cultivate a sense of steadiness and presence through gentle\, accessible yoga followed by a guided body scan. Suitable for all experience levels\, this practice offers an opportunity to settle into the aliveness of the body before engaging with the museum and its collections. Wear comfortable clothes for movement and bring a mat if you have one. A limited number of mats will be available to borrow.   \n  \nKim Holton is an Instructional Associate Professor at UF in the Department of Health Education and Behavior in the College of Health and Human Performance. She began studying yoga in 1998 and teaching in 2002. She has completed teacher trainings through Sivandanda\, Nosara\, and the Kundalini Research Institute and received her certification in yoga nidra through the Amrit Yoga Institute. Kim has also trained with numerous nationally recognized yoga teachers in the traditions of Ashtanga\, Iyengar\, Kripalu\, Kundalini\, Restorative\, and Vinyasa. She has led yoga and workshops at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies and Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. In addition to holding a PhD in health and human performance\, she is a national board-certified health and wellness coach\, health education specialist\, and Narrative Enneagram teacher.

SUMMARY:After Utopia: Feminist Practice in Contemporary Cuban Art
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jasmine Kaur Chohan\, Assistant Curator of Contemporary British Art at the Tate Britain will present a lecture in conjunction with Layered Lives exploring how Cuban women artists\, since the 1990s\, have developed new artistic approaches that engaged with questions of materiality\, spirituality\, migration\, ecology and historical memory. Through the work of artists including Belkis Ayón\, Sandra Ramos\, Mabel Poblet\, Rocío García and Aimée García\, she’ll examine how feminist practices emerged not only through the inscription of women as subjects in art\, but through an intersectional revision of women’s experience with colonialism\, the environment and the politics of identity. The lecture argues that these artists have developed new visual vocabularies through which to reimagine contemporary Cuba from a fluid perspective\, one that understands place not as a single locale but as constituted through transnational borders and oceanic materialities. A free reception will follow the lecture. The Harn is open until 9 pm for Art After Dark on this evening providing an opportunity for attendees to view the Layered Lives exhibition.  This lecture is supported by the UF Center for Latin American Studies; UF Department of Gender\, Sexuality\, and Women’s Studies Edna Saffy Lecture Series; UF International Center; and UF Center for Arts\, Migration + Entrepreneurship.
