The Royal Inca Tunic: A Biography of an Ancient Andean Masterpiece
Thursday, April 17
6:00 – 7:30 pm

With Dr. Andrew Hamilton, Associate Curator of Arts of the Americas, Art Institute of Chicago; Lecturer, Department of Art History, University of Chicago
The most famous work of Andean art in the world is an enigmatic tunic in the collection of Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC. In this talk, Dr. Hamilton offers an entirely new understanding of this object by piecing together its remarkable life history and reveals for the first time that the extraordinary textile is an unfinished masterpiece that was likely being woven by two women on the eve of the Spanish invasion. Made possible by the Harn Eminent Scholar Chair in Art History (HESCAH) program.
This talk is rescheduled from September 24, 2024.
