Intern Isabella RederoWhat motivated you to pursue an internship at the Harn?

I’ve been really interested in finding ways to apply the skills and knowledge I’ve gained through my education and previous work experiences to real-world practice. As I work toward continuing my education, I’m still figuring out exactly what I’d like to do once that’s completed. The Harn internship has given me the chance to step into a role I could actually see myself in and “test the waters.” So far, it has really helped to solidify my interest in becoming a museum Registrar, and I’m excited to continue learning more throughout the summer!

What does a typical day at the museum look like for you?

A typical day usually starts with inventorying the shelves in painting storage alongside my supervisor, Jess Uelsmann. We go through each storage box, taking note of what’s found and what might be missing. After that, I’ll usually spend time at the computer updating item locations and tracking down the missing works in the museum’s database, TMS. On Mondays, we start the day with a department meeting where the Registration team shares updates on new and ongoing projects. Occasionally, I’ll help with exhibition changes, do condition reports on new artwork, and I also get to shadow when artworks are moved for photography, which is always exciting.

What is your favorite work of art in the Harn?

My favorite work at the Harn is Castillo de San Marcos by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1885). I really enjoy the calmness and solitude of the scene, especially with the clouds bubbling up in the background. It makes me wonder if something’s about to happen just around the corner, just out of sight, which is a feeling I often relate to in my own life.

What interests or hobbies do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I love dancing and choreographing. I also enjoy watching movies, painting, and exploring new places around Gainesville. In terms of art history, I’m especially interested in 18th-century Europe, particularly the French Rococo and Revolutionary periods.

How has the Dixie Neilson Museum Studies Registration Internship Fund impacted your academic/career development? In what ways has it enhanced your knowledge of art and museum work?

The Dixie Neilson Museum Studies Registration Internship Fund has had such a meaningful impact on my academic and professional development. It allowed me to take on this internship without worrying about balancing an extra workload, which meant I could focus entirely on learning. Through inventorying, condition reports, exhibition preparation and working in TMS, I’ve gained hands-on experience that has deepened my understanding of what goes into museum registration. I’ve learned how much thoughtful planning and care happens behind the scenes, and it’s made me even more excited about working in museums in the long term.
