Olivia Huey
Development Communications Intern
Fall 2024
Hometown: Sarasota, Florida
Major: Marketing with a minor in Spanish

Why were you interested in the Development Communications internship?

The Development Communications internship stood out to me because of my strong desire for both professional and personal development in this field. As a Marketing major with interests in communications, PR, and development, this internship is directly related to my academic career and future career goals. I wanted the chance to put my academic knowledge into practice, enhance my communication and collaboration skills, and foster valuable connections within the industry. This combined with my strong passion for the arts made this internship the ideal opportunity!

What excites you about interning at the Harn?

I love getting to intimately learn about the current and upcoming exhibitions at the Harn. The history and meaning behind the pieces are so fascinating and as an intern, I love being surrounded by them when I come to work! Seeing what new events and projects are coming up makes the internship constantly engaging and exciting.

How important was it for you to receive the Jacqueline Friel Fund stipend?

The Jacqueline Friel Fund stipend has made my ability to intern with the Harn possible. By lessening financial burdens, I am able to seek out more professional growth and development opportunities. I am so thankful to have received this stipend because it has already further enriched my college experience and allowed me to be a part of such a wonderful community at the Harn!

Where is a place you have always wanted to go, but never been?

I would love to visit the country of Slovenia at some point in the next few years, especially Lake Bled. I am part Slovenian myself and have grown up hearing about the country and their traditions from my grandmother. I would love to try some of the recipes my grandmother made for me growing up in their actual place of origin. And as a huge plus, the landscapes are so beautiful there and I just know it would be a special trip.

Who’s your favorite artist?

Currently, Alphonse Mucha is my favorite artist because I am particularly fond of the Art Nouveau style. I had the opportunity to visit the Mucha Museum in Prague a few summers ago, and ever since I have loved his work. Not only are his paintings and illustrations incredible, but I personally enjoyed seeing his jewelry designs as well. As of the moment, I have a few prints of his works hanging in my room, but I would love to get more!

Favorite place on campus?

My favorite place on campus besides the Harn would have to be Liberty Pond at the Reitz Student Union. It is probably my favorite spot to hang out with friends, grab a bite to eat, or study. I love watching the many different species of birds that inhabit the area and overall, it is a relaxing and peaceful spot.
